Philanthropy & Community Service
In April of 2009, many of the brothers of Beta Gamma Epsilon walked to raise money for the BARCC (Boston Area Rape Crisis Council) along with the Northeastern Sorority Sigma Sigma Sigma. Together we raised $1500 to donate to the cause. As BGE has been getting more involved with philanthropy recently, we intend to walk again this coming April.
As far as other philanthropic events underway, we are looking forward to this summer for the Back Bay’s ‘Alley Rally’. We will be volunteering to clean up the Back Bay’s alleyways (including our own back alley). Work will include removing trash and debris, filling potholes, and general cleaning of all the alleys and it will be a pleasure to work with and meet many of our neighbors who will also be participating.
I,Daniel Sherridan, am currently the Philanthropy Chair and will be helping to organize both of these events. As our numbers have been growing recently, our contributions have potential to have a greater impact on our community.
I grew up sailing at Community Boating in Boston on the Charles River which lets kids sail all summer long for all inclusive membership fees of $1 per year. Their docks have been deteriorating over the years and they need to be replaced. They already have the permits and planning completed but need funding from the city. We will be writing to the mayor’s office trying to expedite their funding.
Not only have we been working on fundraising for cause and environmental improvement, but my assistant philanthropy chairman, Greg Andrus, is also currently looking into visit inner city public schools throughout Boston and promoting engineering to students. Seeing as not many kids know exactly what they want to be when they grow up, brothers will be going to schools and perform a series of experiments, relating to their specific major, to provide some insight and knowledge on how interesting and fun it is to be an engineer-- hopefully our attempts will impress students enough to broaden their horizons and look into potentially pursuing a degree in the engineering field. On the behalf of BGE, Greg and I look forward to organizing these events to make a difference in Boston.
